Elyria beats Shaker Heights 82-71 in OT

Shaker Heights fought hard and the Elyria Pioneers had to go into overtime to shake them off.

The Pioneers, who earned their eighth straight win, outscored the Red Raiders in the extra session 19-8 to get an 82-71 Greater Cleveland Conference victory.

The Pioneers maintains a three-way tie with Brunswick and Medina in the GCC with four to play.  Brunswick, who Elyria beat on Tuesday, escaped by beating Solon and Medina beat Euclid.

The Pioneers (11-4) were led by their dynamic duo of Blake Furcron and Antonio Blanton. Furcron, the 6-5 senior guard, led with 22 points. Blanton, a junior guard, had 21.

The Pioneers who led most of the game had a 63-57 lead with 28 seconds left. Red Raiders junior Isiah Wright would hit back-to-back three’s that tied game at 63, headed into overtime.

The Red Raiders (4-6 GCC, 7-9 overall), who lost their second straight, were led by junior postman George Evans with a career-high 18 points. Junior J’van Beasley added 15. Wright finished with 12.

Elyria will take on hosting Vermilion on Feb. 2. The Red Raiders will visit LeBron James Arena to take on Call and Post’s No. 2 St. Vincent – St. Mary, tomorrow.
